FIELD CROPS JUDGING WORKSHOP COMING FEB. 7

Sponsored by the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association, a Field Crops Judging Workshop has been set for the Kemptville Campus of the University of Guelph Feb. 7.

Beginning at 10 am, the workshop will take place in Room 109 of the Admin Building (beside the cafeteria).. There’s no admission fee and no judging experience is required.

The purpose, said Seed Growers director Jim Arbuckle is to enhance the number and abilities of judges who assess field crops leading up to the annual Ottawa Valley Farm Show. The 80th edition of the show will occur at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa March 13-14.

A major component of the show organized by the OVSGA is judging of seed and crops from across Eastern Ontario, with winning entries displayed in the Hall of Honour on the Civic Centre Concourse throughout the show.

“There aren’t many convenient training and refresher opportunities for field crops judges, so we thought we’d create one,” Arbuckle explained.

During the workshop, participants will view a video on judging standards for field crops, examine the latest resource material, discuss and interpret score cards, practice judging seed samples of cereals, soybeans, hay and corn crops, discuss and review placings, and discuss judging standing crops and sheaves of grain.

Arbuckle emphasized he’ll be looking for participant contributions, so “come prepared to share your ideas, techniques and skills in judging field crops.”

As space is limited, those interested are asked to RSVP before Jan. 22 to Mary Joynt, 613-283-5971 or
ovsg@on.aibn.com.
