| QUILTMASTER PROVIDES HANDIWORK FOR SEED SALE |
| As collectable as any fine piece of art, Victoria points out the single-sized quilt has many general uses around a home other than as a bed covering, including couch throw and decorative piece.
“With the larger quilts, buyers always want to make sure they match the bedroom decor. The single size can go almost anywhere.” Just as a farmer can’t get full return for his time when estimating input costs in a field of corn, Victoria says her prices can’t possibly cover the countless hours that go into an elaborate quilt. Like that farmer, she quilts because she’s driven to do it. On March 17, some lucky seed sale patron will be the beneficiary of that drive. |
| A quilter for 30 years, Victoria VanderLinden of the Metcalfe area has provided one of her colourful works for the annual Prestigious Pedigreed Seed Sale, March 17, 12 noon, at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show. As in the past, net proceeds will go to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. As her contribution, VanderLinden contributed a single bed quilt at only a fraction of the retail price. With hand-quilting provided by the quilters of All Saints Anglican Church of Ottawa, the butterfly/flower pattern, rose-coloured quilt was pieced, appliqued and embroidered by VanderLinden in her home studio on Ray Wilson Road. Victoria is recognized as one of Eastern Ontario’s most accomplished quilters. For the past 20 years, she has taught the craft everywhere from community school on Prince Edward Island, to guilds in the Ottawa Valley and Peterborough, to Metcalfe’s Women Institute and private classes. From a long ligne of quilters, she has been published in Canada Quilts and Quiltmaker magazines and has won numerous local and national awards. Every Friday, she works at Julee’s Homecrafts in Osgoode. A visit to Victoria’s farm home quickly reveals it was designed to accomodate her quilting supplies and activities. Items such as a kitchen came second, she jokes. |
