Pictured here, Kemptville College researcher Jagdish Kumar visited the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association directors on Feb. 23, 2004, looking for financial support to help register new varieties of chickpea and identify suitable herbicides.
Directors responded by alloting $5,000 to the project when it gets underway.
Kumar pointed out that, while under-cultivated in Canada, chickpea is one of the world's foremost, most flexible crops, with new export marketing opportunities opening all the time. He suggested chickpea as an excellent way to diversify Ontario and Quebec concentration on corn and soybeans. |
