Pedigreed Seed Auction a win-win-win situation

OTTAWA - It was a win-win-win situation at the Prestigious Pedigreed Seed Auction hosted by the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association (OVSGA) during the Ottawa Valley Farm Show Fri., March 17, 2000.

The auction of 10 lots of seed, donated by growers from across Eastern Ontario, raised just over $6,000 for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and two lots of seed were purchased by Pioneer and donated to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

The $6,000 final tally during the sale was an increase of $1400 over the amount raised last year, although the OVSGA later topped up the 1999 sale proceeds to $5,000 for the final donation to CHEO. Still, the generosity of buyers, many of whom turned their five, 25-kg lots back to auctioneer John Joynt for re-sale, meant that the children's hospital will benefit by an extra $1,000 this year.

And the Winnipeg-based Canadian Foodgrains Bank will benefit from the donation of two of the seed lots, which will in turn be matched by the Canadian International Development Agency on a three-to-one basis, bringing the total from the sale to the equivalent of a tonne, or 2200 pounds, of seed.

One 125-kilo lots of soybean seed will e given to the six-acre Lyn Valley Growig Project near Brockville and the other lot, 125-kg. of barley, will go to the Grey-Bruce area, according to Kathryn Mayberry of Ingersoll who with her husband, Dave, co-ordinates the Foodgrains Bank's Ontario projects.

The following is a list of the seed donors for this year's sale: David Butler, Pakenham, OAC Paisley oats; Bourgon Seeds Ltd., St. Isidore, AC Walton spring wheat; Hardy Seeds Ltd., Inkerman, Bounty soybeans; Davdonest Farms Ltd., Renfrew, Roblin spring wheat; Marc Bercier Seed Cleaning, St. Isidore, OAC Bayfield soybeans; Reaburn Seed Supply, Westmeath, Profi peas; Barclay Dick and Sons, Douglas, AC Walton spring wheat; R.D.
